How to Set Up PoE Lighting: A Basic Guide
About PoE Lighting
In recent years, Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology has revolutionized the lighting industry, offering a convenient and efficient solution for powering LED lights. If you’re considering setting up PoE LED lighting for your outdoor space, this guide is designed to provide you with the essential information you need. Whether you’re a homeowner or a small business owner, we’ll walk you through the necessary components and where to find them.
Understanding PoE LED Lighting
PoE LED lighting combines the energy efficiency of LED technology with the convenience of Power over Ethernet. With this innovative solution, power is transmitted through an Ethernet cable, eliminating the need for electrical wiring and optimizing control. It’s an ideal choice for outdoor or indoor spaces where easy installation and efficient lighting are crucial.
The above diagram shows just one possible configuration for PoE Lighting.
Setting Up Your PoE LED Lighting System
To set up PoE LED lighting for your space, follow these steps:
1. Check Ethernet Availability:
Ensure that you have an existing Ethernet infrastructure in place to support PoE installations.
2. High-Quality Ethernet Cables:
Use Category 5e (or higher) Ethernet cables to transmit both power and data effectively. For PoE++ (AXTON 56 Watt Lights) use Cat 6 cables.
3. Determine Your Power Requirements:
Consider the wattage requirements of your LED Light. The lights wattage determines the type of PoE IEEE standard needed; PoE, PoE+ or PoE++.
AXTON PoE lights are avaliable in several wattage options:
• 3W to 11 Watt Lights: PoE (IEEE 802.3af) or PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at)
• 25 Watt Lights: PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at) or PoE++ (IEEE 802.3bt)
• 56 Watt Lights: PoE++ (IEEE 802.3bt) note: use cat 6 cable for PoE++
4. PoE Switch and Midspan::
A PoE-enabled network switch is essential for providing power to your PoE LED lights. In some cases, a PoE switch alone may suffice, while in others, a midspan/PoE injector device may be required to ensure adequate power supply.
Each AXTON PoE light requires a separate PoE port with correct IEEE standard (listed above) depending on the lights wattage requirement.
Finding the Required Parts:
When it comes to sourcing the necessary components for your PoE LED lighting setup, consider the following options:
Online Retailers:
Explore popular e-commerce platforms for a wide range of PoE switches, Ethernet cables, and PoE midspan devices.
Local Electronics Retailers
Visit specialized electronics stores that carry networking equipment.
Professional Installers:
If you prefer a hands-off approach or require expert assistance, reach out to professional installers experienced in PoE lighting systems.
Enjoy the Benefits of PoE Lighting
Setting up PoE LED lighting is now more accessible than ever. With the right components, you can enjoy the benefits of energy-efficient and easily managed indoor or outdoor lighting.
Note: Before purchasing any equipment or proceeding with the installation, it is recommended to consult with a professional to ensure compatibility and safety.
