PoE Powered LED Lighting Basics
PoE (Power over Ethernet) was created to supply power via the same ethernet cables already connecting a system for the purpose of data transmission.
PoE power is especially useful for Security Systems since IP Cameras will already be connected to an ethernet system in order to deliver the recorded data over the network. In a PoE powered system the same ethernet cable used for data, is also used to deliver power to the camera, light or other connected device. PoE power also allows easier Plug & Play type of connections compared to conventional and low-voltage powered devices.
PoE Basics for Simple Systems
In order to use an ethernet for power (PoE) you will need a PoE Switch or PoE injector, depending on your system setup. For AXTON lights a PoE injector/Midspan can be used to upgrade an existing LAN installation to PoE.

There are Three PoE Types: PoE, PoE+ & PoE++
The primary difference between PoE, PoE+ and PoE++ is the wattage, or the power of the electric current transmitted to connected devices. The PoE type correlates with the PoE IEEE standard (see list below).
The power of your PoE system will be determined by your PoE injector (or PoE switch if you use one). Make sure you chose the PoE injector that matches the power consumption requirement of your device. The ethernet cable used to connect higher output switches and devices, also needs to be appropriately rated.
AXTON PoE lights are avaliable in several wattage options:
• 3W to 11 Watt Lights: PoE (IEEE 802.3af) or PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at)
• 25 Watt Lights: PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at) or PoE++(IEEE 802.3bt)
• 56 Watt Lights: PoE++ (IEEE 802.3bt)
AXTON PoE Lighting
AXTON PoE floodlights and IR illuminators come in all three PoE types: PoE, PoE+ or PoE++ depending on the light’s power/wattage consumption.
These are just basic guidelines on how PoE works. If you do not have sufficient network experience, please consult IT/Network Professional for advice.
